Surrounded by the splendour of lush tea estates, in a 15 acre forested area, at a height of 1000 metres, in the Himalayan jungle of Kangra district, is the enchanting Taragarh Palace. Built in 1931 by the Nawab of Bahawalpur, this European-style summer residence with immaculate gardens and glass pleasure pavilion, later passed into the hands of the royal family of Jammu and Kashmir, whose descendants currently run this as a Welcomheritage hotel.
This palace, with 26 rooms and suites, was built on the lines of a European summer residence. It has a breathtaking view of the Dauladhar mountains and the tea estates sweeping down the undulating hills surrounding the palace.
In 1951, this palace, subsequently named Taragarh, passed into the hands of the royal family of Jammu and Kashmir who bought it for the dowager Maharani, who spend long years there. While the palace still belongs to the same family, it is now run by them as a Welcomheritage hotel.
