One of Lincoln's longtime residential landmarks, the F. M. Hall House was the scene of many society teas and social gatherings in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Designed in the Queen Anne Victorian style, the original house was built in 1884 by Lincoln banker, Richard Outcalt. Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Hall purchased the home in 1894 and under their stewardship the house was expanded several times. Additions included a large wraparound porch on the southeast, a sun porch east of the dining room and a three-story addition on the north that included a large kitchen on the first floor. The Halls also added a brick gazebo with fountain and lily pond and an iron fence around the property.
Frank and Anna Hall - Frank M. Hall was a prominent Lincoln attorney who founded the law firm that is now Cline, Williams, Johnson, Wright and Oldfather.
Socially active and civically involved, the Halls were world travelers and avid art collectors. Nearly every nook and inch of wall space in the house was filled with their art treasures. Their extensive art collection was donated to the Nebraska Art Association and is now housed at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Upon their deaths, within a few months of each other in 1928, the bulk of the Hall estate was placed in a trust fund for the annual purchase of art. To date, the trust fund has provided more than $1 million toward the acquisition of masterpieces in the Sheldon Gallery.
