The original 80 acre farm was homesteaded by Simon Waller in 1855. The letter granting the patent to the land was signed by President James Buchanan on April 2, 1857. Under the homestead agreement, Simon erected a log cabin on the site where the cottage now stands.
In late 1881, Cyrus McCormick bought the land for $1.93 in back taxes. Since then, the farm has changed hands numerous times. The historic barn was built in Grand Meadow, in the early 1880's. For many years it was used as an ice house. During the coldest part of the winter, ice was cut from a nearby pond and stored for use in the Summer months.
In 1981, the structure was moved to its present location on the property, where it underwent extensive renovations for use as a cattle barn. In 1994, the farm complex was acquired by Shirley and Mike Adams, who constructed the main house of the most environmentally safe methods and materials available. The Adams invite you to explore their wooded wildlife sanctuary, the meadow carpeted with wild flowers and the creek that flows through their land.
