Built in 1910, the house's history is predominated by the Bettie Neumann Girls' Club (named after a YWCA chaperone) which made it their summertime home from 1927 until 1984. The Bonds purchased "The Cottage" in 1991 and have been benefactors of many happy tales from the Girls' Club members.
The combination of their longing for the sea, the discovery of a significant "old Rehoboth" house, and the inspiration of James Dillet Freeman's poem, "Sea Voice" gave the Bonds the impetus to make their long time dream a reality - opening a bed and breakfast inn in 1993 in Rehoboth Beach DE which helps guests get more in touch with their own lives. After 12 great years as a summertime Bed and Breakfast, the Bonds have decided to re-retire and operate this wonder old place as a group rental and retreat house.
