Here at Chachacha backpackers we have met a lot of different people from a lot of different places since we first opened in September of 1997 and as you could imagine we have answered a lot of different questions in that time as well, but one question that keeps coming up is why or where did the name Chachacha come from. You might think that I love dancing, well I do, but that is not where Chachacha came from. As much as I love African names I always have trouble remembering them, and you do want people to remember the name of your place, right? so when I saw Chachacha I thought to myself, who can forget it! Then I found out what Chachacha means here in Zambia.
Chachacha was the name given to the period of time in which the Zambian people fought for and gained their independence in 1964. It became known as the Chachacha era, and hence Chachacha Backpackers was born.
We are conveniently located in the central area of Lusaka, being only a 20 min walk from both the bus and train station and the town centre banks, a ten min walk from Northmead shopping centre and craft market and about a 30 min walk from most of the embassies.
If you were to just end up somewhere in Lusaka, like maybe you hitched in, then you would have to make sure that the taxi knows that we are off Bwinjimfumu Rd. and not on Cha Cha Cha rd.
Your more than welcome to use our free pick-up service when arriving in Lusaka. Just give us a call on 222257 and we’ll come down and get you. It’s a good idea to buy a phone token before you get on the bus so that when you arrive in Lusaka you won’t need to hassle around trying to find one.
At the moment we have three showers with hot and cold water. The showers are cleaned twice a day, so are kept clean.
Defiantly when we are real busy the water can run cold but if you wait about 20 min it will be hot again!! Often at night in Lusaka the council turns the water off (for some unknown reason) So if you get to the shower and there is no water just ask one of our staff and we will turn on the pump in our water reservoir and you can enjoy that hot shower that you have been dreaming about on the bus for the last 8 hours!!!!
We provide great value meals from 7.30 am through to about 8.00pm, the breakfast includes things like muesli, cornflakes, bacon and eggs, full breakfast and more. Our lunch menu includes “the best burgers in Africa” For dinner you could order anything from the breakfast and lunch menus or join us for our set meal which changes each night and includes meals like stir fry chicken and vegetables or a delicious bar-b-que.
If you happen to be a vegetarian, no problem, just ask the staff and they’ll happily prepare you a delicious meal.
If you want information on anything at all in Zambia, then we are the people to ask. If you want to follow the normal trail to Victoria Falls or South Luangwa national Park and are a bit unsure of how to do it, then ask us. If you want something a little more adventurous like exploring the massive Bangwelu swamps or taking a dugout canoe down the Zambezi in Western Province, then its us you should ask. If it’s mobile safaris or canoeing safaris you want then we are the people to see. Or if you just want to book your bunji or white water rafting experience in Victoria falls, then we can help!!!
We have a staff of 13 here at Chachacha. Some like Mr. Mark our gardener and Venture our driver / assistant manager have been with us for years, others like Diana, our breakfast cook or Desmond the barman are relatively new, but all of the staff including, Bridget the manager, Charles and Beatrice the lunch and night cooks, Patricia and Medi the cleaners, Felix and Elias the maintenance men and Golden and Paul the night guards, very much enjoy working here at Chachacha, They are as much interested in your story as you are of theirs. Take some time to speak to the staff, find out about their lives and families, get a closer insight to Zambian ways and culture, I mean some of the staff belong to the Nsenga, Soli, Bemba, Tumbuka and Tonga tribes. You’ll find the staff a perfect example of the friendliness of the Zambian people giving Chachacha Backpackers a nice friendly, homely and relaxed atmosphere.
