Makarska is the tourist Mecca of Central Dalmatia. It lies 67 km southeast of Split, 153 km northwest of Dubrovnik and 80 km south of the Medjugorje pilgrimage site. Due to its mild climate, Makarska is a popular vacation destination throughout the year, but especially from May to October. That is when Makarska is most picturesque and, according to many, best to visit.
Fishermen's Nights, the Summer Carnival, open-air concerts, exhibitions are all a part of a rich and exciting palette of attractions Makarska has in store for those who come to visit. All of these are free and open to the general public.
Did we mention our incredible beaches? Makarska also boasts the cleanest water in the Mediterranean.
Croatia (and Makarska) is one of the safest areas in the world. Incidence of any crime, expecially violent, is far below any European--let alone world--statistical averages. You can stroll the city streets at 3 a.m. and still be and feel extremely safe.
For those who like to explore the area, there is a veritable fleet of small tourist boats which are waiting to take you on affordable daytrips to the nearby islands of Brac and Hvar.
Split, the Dalmatian capital and the site of a very well-preserved Roman Emperor Diocletian's 3rd century palace is only an hour's drive away, while Dubrovnik, "the pearl of the Adriatic" (according to playwright Bernard Shaw) is a two-hour ride south along the spectacular Adriatic highway.
An unforgettable first sight upon arrival in Makarska is the Mount Biokovo, part of the Biokovo natural reserve, rising above the town. The mountain's highest peak is the Sv. George (1762 m). It is accessible both on foot (a beautiful 2-3 hour hike) and by car (45 minute drive). It offers incredible vistas of the islands and photo opportunities for novices and seasoned photoghaphers alike.
For those who enjoy sports, the mild climate and the pristine nature allow for an active vacation or even training camps and sports matches throughout the year. You can use all types of sports fields: soccer pitch, track and field, bike treks, basketball and tennis courts and, of course, all water sports.
