The home was built in 1875 for the Body family. It is said that John Body had briefed builder James J Mawson just after purchasing the lot from Montague. Body asked that Mawson build a house similar to a large street front London terrace. Mawson built what would become Coomas largest and most fabulous home. The house was on 5 acres with numerous outbuildings and cottages throughout the grounds. The property had a staff of many, some old people have suggested that at one time there where 12.There where people for the garden work, house keepers, cook, butler and carriage man.
Today the home is on a smaller block, but it still has 11 bedrooms a huge verandah, servants quarters, a library, lovely formal entrance, gorgeous French doors everywhere, ornate staircase, off street parking, central heating and some lovely garden spaces. Being in Coomas CBD, the house is within a few minutes walk of all facilities that Cooma has to offer. There is the Savoy cinema which is an old country movie theatre featuring modern upgraded equipment and screening the latest films. The centre of town is well known for cafes, cosy restaurants, pubs and clubs. We are also a three minute walk to those famous fast food places. Ellstanmor has its own library but I'm sure that you will love to sit and read in a cafe or at the local library, all just minutes away.
Over the street is the heated swimming centre to which you will have unlimited access for the duration of your stay at Ellstanmor.
The accommodation at the guest house is very smart, but casual. Guests have a nice, clean, renovated and furnished room with ensuite bathroom. Some rooms can be combined to make a large suite with a living room and a huge verandah. Guests are encouraged to relax and take it easy; there are enough spaces to kick back. Our parlour with French doors to the front of the house has a piano and a comfortable leather club suite. The dining room is the hub of the home, casual but very Victorian, with a large bay window and ornate fixtures. You may choose to find a corner and watch a movie or TV, maybe read that overdue book.
Breakfast is a casual affair with great coffee, real tea, breads, fruit, cereals and juice we also cater for those who arent counting calories, so all you have to do is ask.
If guests require evening meals they are invited to eat with the family or we can prepare food for you.
The area is loaded with places to see and go so we can supply guests with picnic lunches and maps if required. We do have the best trout fishing in the country so you may like to try your hand. Or just a walk in the mountains or along a country stream. David and Elle have been in the area since 1987 and have searched out great spots, done a lot of fishing, skiing, bush walking and picnicking. The home is still undergoing some renovations and we will be developing a self contained guest area with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, huge living spaces and private well equipped kitchen.
